Sommelier Frances von Aesch invites you to join her in Aura for Tasting Tuesdays.
We’ll open three unique wines from our wine list for you to explore.
Here’s what we’ll be pouring for the next three weeks:
Tuesday December 15 -Cabernet Franc Rocks the Season
Cabernet Franc is a great wine but one that is sometimes overlooked in favour of more full-bodied reds. It comes into its own this time of year as a great pairing with turkey and ham and even side sweet and savoury dishes. We have three great examples of this wine from around the world. We will feature the Lock & Worth 2017 from Naramata, BC, the Raffault 2017 from the Loire region of France and the Bodega Garzón 2018 from Maldonado, Uruguay. The Lock & Worth is a medium bodied and crisp wine while the Bodega Garzón is a fuller bodied wine fruit forward spiciness. The Raffault is light to medium in body and has savory green tea notes in the finish.
Tuesday December 22 – Celebrate the Sweet
This is the time of year when it is delightful to enjoy something sweet both in food and wine. The combination of both takes matters to another level. This holiday week we will offer a flight of “stickies”, two dessert wines and one delicious liqueur. We will start with the Reserve Late Harvest Vidal from Mission Hill in Naramata, BC. This is a weighty wine with aromas of apricots. Next, the Wild Blackberry from Rocky Creek Winery here on Vancouver Island. This wine is made with 100% wild blackberries and is a beautiful balance of sweet and tart. To finish, the Krupnik Spiced Honey Liqueur from Wayward Distillation on Vancouver Island. Krupnik is based on an old Polish recipe and is often compared to a cinnamon whiskey or spiced rum.
Tuesday December 29- Vive la Méthode Traditionnelle
What holiday wine selection would be complete without a flight of sparkling wines? This Tuesday we will celebrate three sparkling wines all made in the Traditional Method. They can’t, of course, be called Champagne as none of them are from France. Yet the method used and, we would argue, the quality, are much the same. We start in Spain with the Cava Brut Reserva, this is one of the best and most affordable examples of sparkling wine made using the Traditional Method. Next, we have the Blue Mountain Brut from Okanagan Falls in BC. This sparkling wine has a fine mousse and a toasty lemon finish. Finally, we finish off in Luxembourg with the Cuvee de L’Ecusson; this Cuvee is the flagship wine of the Bernard-Massard Winery and is characterized by a citrus bouquet and a buttery finish.
Tasting Tuesday flights vary in price (three – 3oz pours) to allow us opportunity to explore the wine list with you.
The flights will be available from 5pm-9pm and are amazing accompaniments to our small plates menu. And since the wines will be flowing, you’ll be able to enjoy any of the wines featured on the flights by the glass. Stop by, or make a reservation as seating is limited. See you soon!
