British Columbia vs. Germany

Had someone asked Aura’s sommeliers “What would be the best grape to feature in Aura’s first event to showcase the newly renovated restaurant and small plates menu?” We would have easily agreed on Riesling.

Imagine our excitement, then, when we heard that Nikolaus (Nik) Weis was going to be in Victoria. Nik is a third generation winemaker from Germany, passionate about Riesling and in town to showcase the wines of St. Urbans-Hof at the Vancouver International Wine Festival. Germany is, of course, the ancestral home of Riesling and sets the bar high for quality wines made from this grape.

The Weis family don’t just make wine; they also sell vines worldwide – including BC’s  Tantalus Vineyards, located near Kelowna. Tantalus Vineyards has Riesling plantings that originated with Nik’s grandfather, so of course we invited winemaker David Paterson from Tantalus to join us for our Riesling event on February 24th. David is a Kiwi and has spent time at premium wineries in Oregon, France and Australia. Tantalus emphasizes quality production and their Riesling has drawn worldwide attention even from the likes of Jancis Robinson, a wine writer and educator from the UK.

With six Rieslings, two winemakers, Restaurant Chef Austin Lu and Aura’s talented team, you simply can’t go wrong. You’ll start your evening with a sparkling Riesling from Tantalus, then go head to head with four wines: two from Germany and two from BC, served with a selection of courses from Aura’s globally inspired small plates menu.
